for goodness sake 其實就是 for God's sake 或 for Christ's sake。因為 God (神)和 Christ (基督)二字在基督教國家是很受尊敬的,一個人開口隨便稱上帝的名,很容易得罪人,所以避用 God,而用 goodness。就像在美國,很多人不說 Oh, my god! 而說 Oh, my gosh! 一樣。


for goodness sake 在你的句子中,可以譯成「看在老天爺的份上」。

其實,for goodness sake 做一個感嘆語,可以表示厭煩,有點像前一陣子台灣流行的「爸爸節耶,拜託」中的那個「拜託」。它也可以表示驚訝,類似「天哪」。只要你知道那種感覺,怎麼翻譯都可以,例如:

(表示厭煩)
Sit down and be quiet, for goodness sake!
坐下安靜啦,拜託!坐下安靜啦,哎喲喂!坐下安靜啦,老天啊!

(表示驚訝)
For goodness sake, John, what are you doing in the car?

影片中宏偉的峽谷、沙漠及大瀑布,讓人忍不住對這條公路的悲壯歷史去脈起了好奇之心。
